We love grower champagne for its sustainable farming practices, and the pure expression of vineyards and vignerons. If the beauty of the big champagne houses is the precision art of blending from grapes purchased across the region, the beauty of grower champagne is that each glass reflects the identity, origins, and high quality of viticultural practice and family identity.
Grower Champagne is Becoming More Popular
These champagnes are made on a much smaller scale, by the people that own the land, work the soils, and tend the vines.
— Treve Ring
What is Grower Champagne?
What is grower champagne? Simply put, it’s champagne made from growers. These are wines of hand, human, and place, produced by the same estate that owns the vineyards where the grapes are grown. While it’s not true at all that grower champagnes are inherently better than other wines, they are inherently characterful, singular and relevant. These champagnes are made on a much smaller scale, by the people that own the land, work the soils, and tend the vines.
Why you should support Grower Champagne?
Beyond the fact that these wines provide incredible value for the region, grower champagnes celebrate variations in terroir and winemaking, aspects of wine that are fascinating and deserve to be highlighted in Champagne as they are in other regions. The winemaking history stretches back hundreds of years, as it does in nearby Burgundy. Many growers are 4th, 5th, 6th, 7th generation vine farmers and wine makers. They bleed bubbles.
Unlike the large Champagne houses, with extra-large marketing budgets, most of these vignerons are small, humble, family-owned and operated enterprises. These producers are dedicated to making the highest quality wines from their lands, but rarely have the marketing budget or time to promote themselves. Our aim is to champion these growers and provide a voice for them, allow them to share their stories, and show a world of Champagne not well known. These are wines with soul.
Since individual vineyard holdings are small, grower champagnes, by nature and default, focus on a certain region. Vineyards are generally clustered around a single or neighbouring villages, creating wines that reflect that village’s specific site and the grower’s specific style. These are wines of place.
As a group of producers, they are united by a shared approach and philosophy to make wines which reflect them and the terroir of their respective vineyards. We believe these are worthy attributes, and exceptional wines worth sharing.
Grower Champagne Month 2019
For the entire month of June we are popping corks and celebrating our favourite Champagne producers for the second edition of “Grower Champagne Month”! We have worked hard to curate a selection of great wines made by great vignerons. Each bottle of champagne we highlight this month has a family and a face behind the label, and we look forward to sharing their inspiring stories with you. We have partnered with retailers, importers, restaurants and wine bars across British Columbia to create a calendar of exciting tastings and events throughout the month! We hope to expand our partnerships across the lower mainland, and internationally, so any interested groups are encouraged to get in touch!

“I love drinking Grower Champagne because they can offer so many different styles depending on the producer, and they also have much more control on their own grapes and small production to show the true Terroir of a specific site or the natural characteristics of a specific grape variety.”

Grower Champagne are the little guys, they employ a small handful of staff, mostly made up of friends, family and neighbours. They are all driven by passion for the land and quality of their wines. Drinking grower Champagne gives you a chance to discover wine with a real sense of place and identity and the knowledge that you are supporting small local communities that are essential for the success of Champagne. Oh! and they are delicious. – Luc Trottier
